Spirit Level acknowledges that trans+ people of colour (POC) are doubly marginalised, once by society at large, secondly by the trans community itself. We barely know our own bodies, identities and histories so how can we know those who differ from us by colour, culture and upbringing?
Out of The Shadows, Into The Light is a project dedicated in part to overcoming the colour divide or, if we can’t, then at least to build bridges and discourse with and between our brothers and sisters of colour.
One person doing that is Kader Attia, an internationally renowned visual artist who in the 1990s and 2000s documented the lives of Algerian trans sex workers in his published work, The Landing Strip. Focusing on the group’s shared intimacy over roughly two years, Attia sought to capture and present the real lives of those in the community. Kader Attia also offers us powerful insight into the meeting place between gender and sexualit for instance in his piece, The Space, Another Body
We want to do more. If you have ideas about Trans* intersectionality, the issues facing Trans PoC and how we and they can overcome any marinalisation or isolation they experience, contact us. For ideas you may not have thought of, why not check out the work of Sabah Choudery
